Independent Research
Below is information on the benefits of pellet bedding
including excerpts from the website of O2Compost, a division of
Price-Moon Enterprises, Inc. (O2C) is an independent company with
expertise in composting. Peter Moon, P.E. (a licensed civil engineer),
conducted extensive research on the use of pellet bedding versus
traditional bedding. Mr. Moon and O2C do not endorse any particular
bedding brand, however they fully endorse the pellet-bedding concept
as being superior to traditional bedding options.
O2C's goal is to: 1) minimize the amount of carbon
that goes into the compost pile, regardless of the bedding type,
2) help stable owners minimize the cost of their manure management
obligation, 3) help horse owners to develop a new profit center
for their business, whether it be a farm or stable, and 4) contribute
to reducing adverse impacts that traditional bedding has on the
environment.
Pine Stall's All-Pine Pellet Bedding IS the bedding
type of the future. Traditional bedding will become obsolete as
the public's understanding of this superior bedding concept becomes
common knowledge. Today you are learning of how Pine Stall will
save you time and money, make bedding maintenance easier, create
a healthier environment for your horse and solve your disposal problems.

to Pine Stall.
Save Money
For all of us the first question we ask when considering
switching to a new product is, "Will it save me MONEY?"
In choosing Pine Stall the answer is, "YES!" You will
realize savings both directly and indirectly.
When talking to a stable owner who recently switched
to pellet bedding "…after two months, she estimates a
50% savings when all material and handling costs are figured in
this savings."
If composting of the manure is incorporated into the
waste management program, this expense can become cost neutral or
can even become a modest profit center for the farm. O2C has set
up sites across the US and Canada that now receive between $10 and
$18 per cubic yard of finished compost that has been derived from
horse manure and wood pellet bedding.
Easier to Use/ More Efficient
The next question, "Will this product make my
life easier and/or make my operation more efficient?" Again
the answer is a resounding, "YES!"
"…Because the solid manure separates so
easily from the wood fibers, very little of the bedding is actually
removed from the stall…and found that it was quite easy to
separate the waste fraction from the clean bedding. Unlike shavings,
there was very little bedding removed...."
Pine Stall pellets' tremendous absorbency concentrates
urine where it first makes contact with the bedding. The result
is you "…remove only the urine-saturated areas…this
may require some instruction for the stall cleaner to avoid over-cleaning
the fresh bedding materials."
"…As a result, the stall seldom if ever
needs to be fully mucked out." Another stable owner noted "…that
once his stalls had been set up…he never removed all of the
materials and he used far less bedding in the end."
Horse's Health
Pine Stall pellets provide a dry and virtually dust
free environment resulting in a tremendous positive impact on the
horse's health. The clean and dry bedding environment greatly reduces
hoof and coat ailments, respiratory problems, and time required
to attend to these ailments and the cost of vet bills.
Regarding reducing dust "…a stable owner
indicated that there has been relatively little dust associated
with the pellet bedding. Most important, his horses have no respiratory
problems as a result of using wood pellet bedding."
By virtually eliminating wetness in the stall "…"…there
were no flies or offensive odors..."
Storage
"…a stable owner indicated that his bedding
storage requirements have gone down significantly since changing
over from shavings to pellets a year and a half ago. He was able
to switch storage areas for bedding and hay and, as a result, he
is now able to buy larger volumes of hay at discounted prices. This
is one of those indirect savings that can be overlooked when comparing
the economic benefits between different types of bedding."
Waste Problem Solved
"…in the case of horse manure, an initial
compost mix with a high percentage of carbon based bedding material
results in high carbon compost. This often results in nitrogen "fixing"
in the soil, which can be detrimental to plant growth. This, in
turn, can adversely affect product value and marketability. To avoid
this situation, it is always important to minimize the amount of
bedding and maximize the amount of manure in the initial compost
mix."
"…I observed that the stable owner's temporary
storage pile indeed consisted predominantly of solid manure, with
very little bedding."
"…after only 6 days of composting…I
discovered that all of the manure had changed significantly and
was now a uniform, dark brown color…"
Your Manure pile becomes a profit center
"…In the case of wood pellets / manure mix,
the Carbon to Nitrogen ratio (C:N) of the finished product is below
20:1, and as such the nutrients contained in the compost will be
released to the soils and plants. In the case of shavings / manure
mix, the C:N is nearly 70:1, and in this case nutrients will be
drawn from the soil to continue the decomposition of the wood fraction.
This is clearly disadvantageous in every regard."
"…use of these materials (composted manure
from a pellet-bedded stall) provides the horse owner / stable manager
the possibility of decreasing expenses and creating a profit center
for the farm. AND … you will be producing a waste (i.e., resource)
material that is ideal for aerated composting."
Conclusions
"Based on my observations, I believe that you
will see a 40 to 60% reduction in the volume of waste materials
generated and a similar reduction in the time required for this
daily task. Many people initially object to the cost of the pellets
when compared to shavings. However, do consider all of the factors
involved, including fresh material storage, bedding installation,
mucking, and handling and/or disposal of the manure and spent bedding.
I fully anticipate that you will see significant savings with wood
pellets when all of these factors are considered."
